Areola Reduction; What To Expect After Surgery

No two breasts are the same. There are many differences in size, shape and volume. Same goes for areolas, which is the area that surrounds the nipples. Many people, men and women, have various shapes and sizes and even coloring. Those with larger areolas can sometimes feel self-conscious or more aware of the appearance of their areolas.

An areola reduction is a procedure that reduces the diameter of your areolas. This procedure can be performed alone or with any other procedure such as a breast augmentationbreast lift, or breast reduction.

There are many benefits to surgery, improving the size of your areolas can lead to a more confident you. It is also a quick procedure that if done alone has a short recovery time!

With every surgery there are always risks and complications that are possible that can be very minor and some that are almost very rare. After your procedure you can sometimes experience a loss of sensation in the area, but that sensation returns once your body has fully recovered. On the very rare occasion that loss of sensation could remain permanent as well as the inability for women to breast feed. Not being able to breast feed typically is because there was damage to the milk ducts during surgery… again it is rare.

There are the risks of your areolas changing in size and color after surgery, typically these changes are due to changes in hormones or if the patient becomes pregnant.

Scarring from an areola reduction is very minimal and sometimes unnoticeable. When your incisions have healed you can safely start treatment on scarring. At our office we recommend a medical grade silicone scar gel, Silagen. When used as suggested, patients have noticed a dramatic change in their scars!

Unlike a breast lift or breast reduction, recovering from this procedure is much easier but still the length of time varies patient to patient. You still want to avoid exercising for about 2-3 weeks. Following post-surgery instructions can help aid in your recovery. Many people with low impact jobs tend to go back to work 2-3 days after surgery. Always consult with your doctor to see what they recommend for you!
