Why did you choose to study in plastic surgery?

When I was in High School, I loved science, but didn’t really know the path that I wanted to take with my career. After I married and had my first child, I spent a much of my time in Hospital because my first child was born 3 months pre-mature. I was very drawn to medicine at this time and as a result decided I wanted to go to Medical School to become a Pediatrician.

During medical school, every student is given the opportunity to rotate through various specialties. When I rotated through pediatrics, I had a hard time coming home at night knowing there were so many severely ill children. I started to question if I had made the right decision going into medicine. It wasn’t until I rotated through general surgery and entered an operating room for the first time, that I knew medicine was where I was meant to be. I even chose to take an elective rotation in plastic surgery, rather than take my vacation, so I could familiarize myself with a surgical sub-specialty. It was during my plastic surgery rotation when I knew I had found my calling. I especially loved that plastic surgeons operated on all areas of the body. It felt so fulfilling to give a newborn with a cleft lip a perfect smile or help a construction worker with a severe hand injury heal and go back to work. What I found most rewarding was helping women attain their desired body beautification through plastic surgery. I believe plastic surgery helps our souls. I’ve loved every minute of my decision and feel so fortunate that I’ve been given this opportunity to help people achieve their dreams.

What is your favorite part of being a plastic surgeon?

I feel honored to have been given the opportunity to use my surgical skills to enhance a person’s quality of life. I love knowing my patients trust me to give them the absolute best results. I love being in the operating room and performing intricate techniques during surgery. Many of my patients have been coming to me for over 15 years, allowing me to create personal relationships with them and their extended family.

If you could give potential patients one piece of advice while they are searching for a surgeon, what would it be?

I recommend researching before your first visit. Making sure they are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. Additionally, if you are having a cosmetic procedure check to see if they are a member of The Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. The Aesthetic Society has specific requirements regarding the number of cosmetic cases surgeons must perform to be considered for membership. Therefore, surgeons accepted into the society have been verified and therefore operate at a higher level than others. When you meet with a surgeon, I recommend having a list of questions you want answered. Having a list of questions ensures nothing is missed during the meeting. Also, be sure to have looked at several “dream” photos to choose what kind of look you want. For the best results, get comfortable with your surgeon! Always remember that the first operation gives you the best chance of getting your optimal results.

We are here to listen and address your concerns.
